چکیده

A technique based on microwave sensing technologies has been developed which provides a means of estimating the average moisture content across a stack of timber during kiln drying. The microwave sensor, which comprises of a linear array of slots excited from both ends, was developed and trialed under a range of standard commercial kiln drying schedules using 100mm x 50mm Pinus radiata sample boards. Discrete power measurements in the frequency range from 5.3 to 5.5 GHz were performed and then summed to produce a gradient response. This gradient response is a measurement of the frequency shift of the resonant peak of the array with respect to the moisture content of the material covering the slot. Using this measured gradient response a linear model was developed and then inverted to produce an estimate of the average moisture content across the stack. Analysis of the relationship between the estimated and actual average moisture contents showed a significant correlation . Moisture contents of less than approximately 15% (by dry basis) gave an error of less than 3% in moisture content for confidence levels of 99%. The error increased as moisture content increased and for moisture contents below 50% an error of 10% at the 99% confidence levels was found. Further work is being performed to enhance this technique.

In-kiln Moisture Content Measurement of Timber Using a Waveguide Aperture Array

A microwave technique for the measurement of average moisture content of stacked timber during kiln drying has been developed. This technique based upon a linear array of slots in a waveguide has been modelled and experimentally verified. The experimental trials using standard kiln drying schedules have shown the technique to be accurate to within 1%.

Density-independent high moisture content measurement using phase shifts at two microwave frequencies.

Density-independent high moisture content measurement is required in actual production line. In this paper, the experimental results for high moisture content measurement using microwave free-space technique are presented. The method is based on a ratio of phase shifts at two microwave frequencies after propagating through a sample. The experiments were performed with three kinds of sawdust nam...

Microwave Preconditioning to Accelerate Solar Drying of Timber

Wood drying is essential for preparation of this natural resource for practical applications. Solar drying can reduce drying costs and energy consumption. There are many potential models to describe the drying process. However, most models confirm that the tortuosity of the moisture transport path is an important control parameter during the diffusion-controlled drying process. Microwave heatin...

Frequency Optimization for Dynamic Measurements of Wide-range Moisture Content using Microwave

This paper describes dynamic and static measurement methods for wide-range moisture content of agricultural products such as rice and silage. The proposed method uses the attenuation and phase shift of the microwave transmitted signal through a microstrip transmission line (MSTL) sensor. The results of dynamic measurements of rice samples with low moisture content(< 18 %) showed close agreement...

Density-independent Microwave Measurement of Moisture Content in Static and Flowing Grain

Conventional techniques for the determination of moisture content in grain often use small static samples to represent several tons of material, A more desirable alternative would be a method which utilizes continuous dynamic moisture measurement of the grain. The potential for making density-independent moisture content measurements in both static and flowing grain using microwave frequencies ...
